For both our High School aged students and our Adults we offer training in many different areas of self defence such as...

This is all applied using highly specialised evasive footwork so you are much harder target to hit. Virtually all of the training is done in pairs for example a typical drill might be they grab your shirt with their right hand and punch to the head with the left, we then practice a defence against this situation. Our partnered training methods are much better preparation for real life self defence than standing in a line and doing techniques by the numbers in the air.

Lessons In Mindfulness
LIM comprises of 2 modules each containing 12 booklets for a total of 24 lessons. The lessons have themes such as The value of peace , Do what you can do perfectly , Achieving mastery and Partners not Opponents just to name a few. Each student has 3 booklets to complete in order to be eligible for their next belt exam which is every 3 to 4 months.
Here's one student's response to the ” Do Not Disturb ” LIM exercise
"I liked the Do Not Disturb chapter. By reading it I realised that it is an important year for me because I am doing my Year 12 VCE. I can't afford to waste my time; I need to spend it on my work.
The more time and effort that I put into it the better my result will be at the end of the year. I have realised that i waste my time by doing meaningless things like watch TV for two hours straight, if I put that time into my homework, the more work i would get done.
Now that I have realised that I waste my time, I am going to create a timetable and allocate important things that need to be done at specific times. I believe that with the new timetable I will get more work done and still have plenty of free time left over. By reading this chapter, it has given me a new perspective on time and how to use it more effectively."
Pretty powerful stuff!
Additional Junior Adults Skills
Our Junior Adults students study the Hanbo 3 foot staff and the Bo 6 foot staff. Skills include all of the basic strikes, blocks and spinning methods as well as a selection of Kata (prearranged series of techniques) from the Kukishinden Ryu.
The Bo staff. There are 60 Kata in the schools syllabus and the Junior Adults train in a dozen of these sixty techniques, we cover a lot more when you move on up to the adults training.

A Hanbo is a 3 foot staff that originated from the Bo either breaking or being cut in half in battle. There are many techniques in the Hanbo training, locks, throws, strikes and controls against kicks and punches to several Kata against swords and short swords. In the Junior Adults classes we concentrate on the basic to intermediate levels of training with the Hanbo.

Some reasons why this training is an essential area of study not to be ignored include
- It accelerates your unarmed self-defence skills.
- It assists in creating more intense training experience for our students
- It teaches different distances of defence and safety
We realise that you are almost certainly never going to use any of your weapons training in real life and we would never want you to. That said all of our students love this training not only for the extra body control and understanding it brings, but also because it really is a lot of fun!
A very important part of Self Defence training today is Knife Defence. Do you know that there are several thousand knife attacks reported in Melbourne each year? At Guests Martial Arts we offer seminars through out the year on knife defence and highly recommend students participating that these specialist events. More information about our Knife defence training can be found in the adults section
